You hear it before you see it — a hiss inside a wall, a rush from the basement, water spreading across the floor faster than seems fair. How fast is “fast enough”?
It helps to know what you’re racing. A failed half-inch supply line can release several gallons a minute, and a fitting that lets go completely on a pressurized line empties faster still. That’s why a burst caught in ninety seconds and one caught in twenty minutes are genuinely different events: the first wets one room, the second can run down through a ceiling and ruin a floor below. Minute two: check for electricity before you wade in
Now the instinct kicks in hard — get into the water and start saving things. Hold off for ten seconds, because this is the step that actually hurts people.

Minute three: drain the lines so the leak stops
Here’s the step almost everyone skips, and it’s the difference between a burst that keeps dribbling and one that goes quiet. Even with the main shut, there’s still pressurized water sitting in the pipes above the break, and it will keep seeping out until you give it an easier way out.
Bleeding the system after the main is off
- Open the lowest cold taps first. Turn on faucets on the lowest level — basement, then first floor — plus any outdoor spigots. Gravity pulls the standing water down and out through these, away from the burst.
- Then open the upper-floor taps. Opening higher faucets breaks the vacuum so the lines drain fully instead of holding water by suction.
- Flush every toilet. That empties the tanks and the pressurized water in their fill lines.

Minutes four and five: contain the spread
With the flow stopped and the area confirmed safe, the job shifts from stopping water to keeping the damage from traveling.
- Get belongings up and out. Lift furniture off wet carpet, carry rugs, electronics, paper, and anything porous to a dry spot. Slip foil or wood blocks under any furniture legs that have to stay on wet flooring so they don’t stain or wick.

The one mistake that turns a small burst into a big one
If there’s a single error that escalates a manageable burst, it’s this: stopping at “the leak stopped.” People shut the water, mop the visible puddle, set out a fan, and call it handled — while water has already wicked into the wall cavity, under the flooring, and into the subfloor where no towel reaches.
A clean burst caught fast and dried fast is genuinely a DIY job. A clean burst that looks dried but quietly soaked the structure is a mold problem two weeks out. The tell is whether the water touched only hard, sealed surfaces you could wipe, or whether it sat against drywall, baseboards, carpet, or wood for any real length of time. Then make the calls — and know which call
Once the emergency is stable, you have two different problems and often two different phone numbers.
- A plumber repairs or replaces the failed pipe. Shutting the water off bought you time; it didn’t fix the metal. This call is unavoidable.
- A water damage or restoration company handles drying when the water outran a mop. Document before you touch anything
